There are new rules for U.S. debt collectors that can make contacting debtors much easier and might provide a better success rate in establishing a line of communication. Changes to the FDCPA allows debt collectors to use email, text and social media to contact debtors. Messages will have to be private, so collectors will have to use the direct message capability. They cannot send a friend request without notifying the debtor who they are. Companies have to give debtors the option to opt out. These are terrific techniques to help collectors obtain some of the $15 trillion of debt that was reported in Q3 of 2021.
